Gardening Club at Tubbercurry Community Library

A free weekly gardening club for children runs every Thursday afternoon through the summer at Tubbercurry Community Library, organised by Sligo County Library. It is a practical, hands-on session aimed at kids aged 6 to 12 who want to get their hands dirty, learn how plants grow, and spend an afternoon doing something purposeful outdoors. What to expect

Sessions run for about ninety minutes and focus on the kind of gardening that actually holds a child’s interest - planting seeds, checking on what is already growing, turning compost, and taking on small seasonal projects. Sligo County Library has built a strong outdoor learning strand into its children’s programming, so these sessions tend to be led by staff who know how to keep younger ages engaged. Children get to track progress across weeks, which gives the recurring sessions a cumulative satisfaction that a one-off workshop cannot match. There is no prior experience needed and no equipment to bring - the library supplies what is needed.

Getting there

Tubbercurry sits on the N17, the main Sligo to Galway road, roughly 35 km south of Sligo town. By car from Sligo it is a straightforward 30-minute drive. From Galway, the N17 north brings you in under an hour. Bus Eireann runs services along the N17 corridor connecting Tubbercurry to Sligo town and Charlestown, so public transport is an option if you are coming from those directions. The library is on Humbert Street in the town centre - Tubbercurry is a small town and the library is easy to find once you are in. Street parking is generally available on and around Humbert Street.

Tubbercurry is the main market town for South Sligo and has a good range of cafes and shops for a stop before or after the session. The surrounding countryside - Ox Mountains to the west, the Curlew range to the south - makes for fine driving or walking if you want to extend the afternoon.
