Sligo Film Society Autumn Season 2026

At The Model · The Model arts centre, Sligo, Co. Sligo

Sligo Film Society autumn season screenings

Sligo Film Society has been running since 1944, which makes it the oldest operational film society in Ireland. That is not a small claim. Every autumn and winter, it brings a season of arthouse and foreign-language films to The Model arts centre in Sligo town - the kind of cinema that rarely makes it to a multiplex screen. If you enjoy thoughtful, well-crafted films from across Europe and beyond, this is the programme to follow.

What to expect

Screenings take place on Thursday evenings at The Model, a contemporary arts centre that also houses the Niland Collection of twentieth-century Irish art. The cinema itself has a full-size movie screen and a 4K digital projector, with around 200 seats - comfortable and purpose-built for film viewing rather than an ad-hoc arrangement.

The season runs through autumn and into winter, with weekly screenings. The society’s approach has been consistent since its founding: to bring international cinema of genuine quality to Sligo, covering films from every nationality that would not otherwise get a showing locally. A trailer for the following week’s film is typically shown at the end of each screening, so you can plan ahead. Specific titles and dates for the 2026 season are announced closer to the start - check the Sligo Film Society website for the full programme once it goes live.

The screenings are presented in partnership with The Model and Access Cinema, and the event is open to all.

Getting there

Sligo is on the N4/N17 corridor and is well connected by road from Dublin (roughly 2.5 hours), Galway (about 1.5 hours), and Derry (just over an hour). Bus Eireann and Expressway run regular services into Sligo Bus Station, which is a short walk from The Model. Sligo also has a rail link to Dublin Connolly, with several trains a day. The Model is on The Mall in Sligo town centre. Parking is available nearby at the Connaughton Road Car Park, which has dedicated disabled spaces close to the venue entrance.

While you’re in Sligo

A Thursday evening screening fits neatly into a longer Sligo visit - the town has good eating options near The Model and the river walk is pleasant in the early evening. There is more to see in Sligo and across Co. Sligo.
