The 2026 Sligo Senior Football Championship reaches its climax on the weekend of Saturday, 10 October and Sunday, 11 October 2026, when the county final is played to decide who succeeds Shamrock Gaels as senior champions. Ten clubs began the campaign in July, whittled down through group games, quarter-finals and semi-finals to the two sides left standing. The final is traditionally played at Markievicz Park, Sligo GAA’s home ground in the county town, and is the single biggest day in the Sligo club football calendar.
Group winners went straight to the semi-finals, with second and third-placed teams meeting in the quarter-finals first, so the two finalists will have come through different routes to reach October. Group 1 was drawn from Eastern Harps, Shamrock Gaels, St Mary’s, Tourlestrane and Tubbercurry, and Group 2 from Coolaney/Mullinabreena, Coolera-Strandhill, Drumcliffe-Rosses Point, Easkey and St Molaise Gaels. Shamrock Gaels arrive as three-time champions chasing back-to-back titles, in a competition that has run since 1888, one of the oldest club football championships in the country. The winners lift the Owen B. Hunt Cup and go on to represent Sligo in the Connacht Senior Club Football Championship later in the year. Expect the biggest crowd of the club football season, a packed clubhouse afterwards for the winning side, and the kind of local intensity that inter-county games rarely match.
Markievicz Park is in Sligo town, close to the town centre. Irish Rail runs a daily service from Dublin Connolly taking around two and a half to three hours, and Bus Eireann connects Sligo with Dublin, Galway and Donegal. By road, Sligo sits where the N4 meets the N15. For a county final, arrive early, as parking near the grounds fills up fast.
A county final weekend is worth building a day around. Sligo town’s Yeats sites, the county museum and The Model arts centre are all a short walk from the grounds, and the coast at Strandhill and Rosses Point is close by if you want sea air before or after the match.
