Open Day at the Schoolhouse at Annaghmore

The Irish Landmark Trust opens the doors of its restored schoolhouse at Annaghmore, near Collooney, for a National Heritage Week open day on Sunday 16 August 2026. Built in the 1860s to educate the children of tenants on the Annaghmore estate, the building was later restored by the Trust and now operates as self-catering holiday accommodation. For one day it opens to the public so visitors can see the conservation work up close and learn about the building’s history as a working schoolhouse.

What to expect

This is a self-guided open day rather than a timed tour, so visitors can arrive any time between 10am and 4pm and explore at their own pace. Original architectural features from the building’s schoolhouse days remain visible alongside the sympathetic restoration work carried out by the Irish Landmark Trust, a charity that rescues and repairs historic Irish buildings for continued use. It is a rare chance to see inside a property that is normally a private holiday let, and a good example of how a small rural school building from the 1860s has been kept in use rather than left to fall down. Parking on site is limited to a handful of cars, so early arrival is worthwhile.

Getting there

Annaghmore is in the countryside a short drive from Collooney, just off the main routes linking Sligo town with Ballysadare and the N4. On-site parking is available for a small number of cars only, so car sharing is worth considering if travelling in a group.
