Rathcroghan Visitor Centre brings a storytelling evening to Blue Raincoat Theatre Company’s Sligo home on Friday 25 September 2026, with Mike McCarthy exploring Irish mythological themes built around the death of Queen Medb, the legendary warrior queen of Connacht. Rathcroghan, in neighbouring County Roscommon, is one of Ireland’s great royal sites and closely tied to the Medb legend, and the evening brings that material to a Sligo audience through spoken storytelling rather than a staged play.
McCarthy works through the mythology surrounding Medb, a central figure in the Ulster Cycle best known from Táin Bó Cúailnge, and the various accounts of her death, using the storytelling traditions associated with Rathcroghan, her legendary seat of power. Expect an evening built on spoken narrative rather than staged drama, in keeping with Blue Raincoat’s own history of experimental and text-led performance work. The two-hour event suits anyone with an interest in Irish mythology, folklore or the pre-Christian history of the midlands and west, and offers a chance to hear stories usually associated with the Rathcroghan site told away from its Roscommon home.
Blue Raincoat’s venue is on Lower Quay Street in Sligo town, close to the river and within easy walking distance of the town centre and its bus and rail station.
