Spike Island Literary Festival brings crime and thriller writers to one of Cork Harbour’s most striking settings, a former prison island with more than 400 years of history behind its walls. Now in its third year, the festival runs from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 September 2026, with programming built around author conversations, live readings and panel discussions inside the island’s fort buildings.
The 2026 lineup includes crime writers Mark Billingham, Andrea Mara, Stuart Neville and Catherine Ryan Howard among the confirmed authors, with sessions covering everything from the craft of plotting a thriller to true-crime-adjacent conversations that lean into the island’s own dark history as a prison site. The setting is a genuine part of the draw - talks and readings held inside centuries-old fortress walls give the festival an atmosphere that a conventional hotel conference room can’t match. Expect a programme aimed at both committed crime fiction readers and anyone curious about first getting into the genre.
Spike Island is reached by ferry from Kennedy Pier in Cobh, a crossing of around ten minutes. Cobh itself is roughly 25 minutes from Cork City by car via the N25 and R624, and is also served directly by rail from Cork Kent Station on the Cobh commuter line, which is the easiest way in if driving and parking in Cobh during a busy festival weekend feels like a hassle. Ferry crossings run on a timetable rather than continuously, so check sailing times and book festival tickets, which typically bundle the ferry crossing, in advance.
