The Scratch at Wexford Spiegeltent Festival

At Fortuna Spiegeltent · The Quay, Wexford Town, Co. Wexford

A folk-metal band performing an energetic live set inside a spiegeltent

What to Expect

The Scratch bring their genre-blending folk-metal sound to the Fortuna Spiegeltent as part of the Wexford Spiegeltent Festival, a standing, strictly over-18s show inside the tent’s mirrored, timber-floored interior. The Dublin four-piece, Conor Dockery, Cathal McKenna, Daniel Lang and Gary Regan, built their name on a live show that mixes acoustic instrumentation with the energy of a metal gig, and their second album Mind Yourself debuted at number one on the Irish Vinyl Charts and picked up an Irish Album of the Year nomination. They have since toured the US with Dropkick Murphys and appeared in Netflix’s House of Guinness, raising their profile well beyond the Irish festival circuit that first built their following. Their newest record, Pull Like a Dog, is billed by the band as a new chapter, and the Wexford show sits inside the same October run as Wexford Festival Opera, giving the town two very different kinds of music happening within a few hundred metres of each other.

Their sound, built on acoustic guitars, banjo and mandolin played with the intensity of an electric rock band, has made them one of the more distinctive acts on the Irish festival circuit in recent years, drawing crowds who might not otherwise cross over between trad and metal audiences. Opening weekend of the Spiegeltent’s closing fortnight, this show sits alongside Keith Barry’s comedy date on the same night, giving the festival two very different late shows running under the one tent roof across the same 23 October evening.
