The Specials Ltd

At TF Royal Hotel & Theatre · Old Westport Road, Castlebar, Co. Mayo

The Specials Ltd poster

The Specials Ltd bring a full-blooded 2-Tone show to Castlebar on a Saturday night in late July, and if you have any fondness for ska, reggae or the particular charged energy of late-seventies British music, this is worth the trip. The eight-piece band are widely regarded as the most faithful tribute to The Specials in the business, drawing on former touring members and musicians with deep roots in the original ska scene. The set pulls heavily from the 1979-1981 golden run - the years that gave us Ghost Town, Too Much Too Young, Gangsters, and Rat Race - and the show is aimed squarely at people who want to dance rather than stand politely.

What to expect

The Specials Ltd have been playing UK and Irish venues for years, and what sets them apart from the average tribute act is that the performance is built around the full eight-piece lineup the original band used. That means a proper brass section, a pumping rhythm section, and the vocal interplay that made The Specials unusual in the punk era. Crowds at their shows tend to be on their feet from the opening bars. The TF Royal event listing notes it is unreserved seating for over-18s, so if you want a good vantage point, arriving when doors open at 8pm makes sense. The show itself starts at 9pm. The venue is cashless, so leave the coins at home.

The TF Royal is the largest live music venue in Ireland outside Dublin, with a 4,000 standing capacity and a 3,200 sq ft stage fitted with full production rigging, lighting and sound. It draws major national and international acts regularly, and the room genuinely handles a big ska show - the sound is built for it.

Getting there

Castlebar is the county town of Mayo and sits on the N5, roughly two hours from Dublin and one hour from Galway. From Dublin, take the M4 west to Longford and then pick up the N5 all the way through Strokestown and Westport Road into Castlebar. From Galway, the N17 north to Claremorris connects to the N60 into Castlebar.

Bus Eireann serves Castlebar from Dublin and Galway on several routes, and the town also has a train station with connections to Dublin Heuston via Westport or Ballina. The TF Royal is on Old Westport Road and has a multi-storey car park adjacent to the theatre - parking is straightforward for a weekend night show.

While you’re in Castlebar

Castlebar has a solid town centre with good options for food and a drink before the show, and the surrounding county repays exploration if you’re making a weekend of it. There is more to see in Castlebar and across Co. Mayo.
