At Tullow Mart · Fairgreen, Tullow, Co. Carlow
If you want to see the pulse of south Leinster farming, a Saturday at Tullow Mart in early autumn is as good a place as any to find it. Each week from mid-September through to the end of November, Tullow Livestock Sales runs a dedicated weanling auction at the Fairgreen - drawing buyers and sellers from across Carlow, Wicklow, Kilkenny and beyond. Entry is free, and the atmosphere is the kind of practical, good-humoured commerce that has kept this mart going since it opened its doors in the mid-1950s.
The sale kicks off at 10:30am and moves at a decent pace once the auctioneer gets going. Weanlings - young cattle typically between six and ten months old, weaned off their mothers and being sold on for finishing or further store - come through the ring in lots, with weights and breeds called out as each pen enters. Buyers range from local farmers topping up their stock to larger operators looking for value at the start of the store cattle season.
If you can’t make it in person, or if you’re a farmer bidding from another county, Tullow Mart offers online bidding through the MartEye platform at tullowmart.marteye.ie. The sale dates run every Saturday within the mid-September to late-November window, making it a regular fixture on the south Leinster mart calendar. For the most up-to-date schedule and any special sales, it’s worth calling ahead on 059 9151296 or emailing sales@tullowmart.ie.
