Weaving Culture & Heritage

At Strokestown Park · Strokestown, Co. Roscommon

Tapestry weaving demonstration at Strokestown Park's Vaulted Stables

Strokestown Park’s Vaulted Stables hosts Weaving Culture & Heritage on Saturday, 5 September 2026, an evening built around Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union and presented as part of the Culture Ireland Cultúr 2026 programme. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. The evening pairs a live textile art demonstration with a concert, both built around a shared, often overlooked history connecting Ireland to continental Europe.

What to expect

The first half, Weaving Together, brings tapestry artists Frances Crowe from Roscommon and Marie-Thumette Brichard from Brittany together to demonstrate their craft side by side, tracing the historical Huguenot connections between Ireland and France through the shared practice of tapestry weaving. The second half is a concert by Les Irlandais de Bretagne, a Breton ensemble performing songs in English, French, Breton and Irish, built around what the organisers describe as a shared Celtic heritage and a largely forgotten history of migration and mutual influence between Ireland and Brittany. Together the two halves make the same point in different mediums: that Ireland’s cultural links to Europe run deeper and older than most visitors realise. The event is presented by Strokestown Park with support from Roscommon County Council, and the venue confirms it is fully wheelchair accessible.
