West Cork History Festival 2026 - Boundaries

At Inish Beg Estate · Inish Beg, Baltimore, Co. Cork

Inish Beg Estate near Baltimore in West Cork

The West Cork History Festival marks its tenth year in 2026 with a theme that feels particularly well-chosen for the times: Boundaries - setting them and crossing them. Held over three days at Inish Beg Estate near Baltimore, it brings together historians, authors and commentators for a weekend of talks, film screenings and field trips in one of the most quietly striking corners of Ireland. If you enjoy serious ideas discussed in a relaxed setting, with good company and a food truck nearby, this is an excellent way to spend a weekend in August.

What to expect

The 2026 programme opens on Friday 7 August at 3pm with a panel on Irish Taoisigh featuring political commentator Iain Dale, historian Gary Murphy and journalist Stephen Collins. Paddy McGuinness and Professor Ben Tonra follow with a session on Irish defence and security policy. Saturday is the fullest day: Cormac Moore examines the Irish Boundary Commission, Lewis Baston (author of Borderlines: A History of Europe in 29 Borders) looks at European borders past and present, and Sam McBride explores Irish reunification. Saturday evening at 7pm brings three film screenings from Wombat Media covering local West Cork history subjects. Sunday turns to social history - Irish emigrant women, Presbyterian Ulster, Eva Gore-Booth, and a pair of talks on Jonathan Swift. Most talks are available to stream online free of charge. In-person weekend and day tickets are available through Eventbrite.

Field trips and optional extras run on Friday and Saturday: e-bike tours with Gormú (use code WCHF26 for 10% off), walking tours in Ballydehob and Skibbereen, a visit to Reen Farm, and sea kayaking with Atlantic Sea Kayaking. The estate itself is a 97-acre organic farm and woodland on a private island reached by a road bridge across the Ilen estuary, with a Bronze Age boulder burial and a walled garden on the grounds.

Food, a coffee truck and a bar are all on site. The Taoiseach Micheál Martin is confirmed to open the festival.
