Relay For Life Westmeath returns to Tyrrellspass GAA Club for a 24-hour team walking relay in aid of the Irish Cancer Society, starting at 2pm on Saturday 19 September 2026 and running through the night until 2pm the following day. Teams take turns keeping at least one member walking the course for the full 24 hours, a format the Irish Cancer Society uses at Relay For Life events around the country to raise both funds and awareness for cancer research and patient services.
The day opens with a Survivors Lap, in which people who have had a cancer diagnosis walk the first circuit to applause from the crowd, before teams take over the relay for the rest of the afternoon and night. At dusk the event holds its Candle of Hope ceremony, when personalised candle bags bought in memory of loved ones or in support of someone facing cancer are lit around the track for an evening of music and remembrance. Entry is free and there is no set admission charge; the event runs on team fundraising and on-the-day donations, with a county fundraising target of €40,000 for 2026. Cancer survivor and local advocate Peter Yeadon has been encouraging teams from across Westmeath to register ahead of the date, describing it as a community event that remembers those lost to cancer, supports those affected, and celebrates survivors.
Tyrrellspass GAA Club is on the Mullingar Road on the edge of Tyrrellspass village, close to the N6 Dublin to Galway route, with parking available at the club grounds for the duration of the event.
