Once a month, Clonmellon’s Old Market Square fills with stalls for The Market Clonmellon, a curated artisan food and craft market run by the local community and held on the third Sunday of the month. Clonmellon is a small planned town on the Westmeath and Meath border, laid out in the 1770s by Sir Benjamin Chapman, and the square at its centre gives the market a genuine historic backdrop rather than a car park or hall. Since launching, it has built a reputation locally for quality artisan food over volume of stalls.
Expect a smaller, more curated market than the county’s weekly farmers markets, with an emphasis on locally sourced produce and handmade crafts rather than a large number of stalls. Coverage of the market in the Westmeath Examiner has specifically noted the quality of artisan food on offer, and the market has marked milestones such as its first birthday with the local community actively involved in running it, right down to vendor applications going through a dedicated community email address rather than a commercial promoter. Because it runs monthly rather than weekly or fortnightly, stallholders tend to bring their fuller seasonal range each time, and it draws shoppers from Clonmellon itself as well as from Delvin, Kells and the wider Meath and Westmeath border area.
Clonmellon sits on the R156 near the Westmeath and Meath boundary, with the Old Market Square at the centre of the village, easy to find on foot from anywhere in the town. There is on-street and square-side parking, and no rail service reaches this part of the county, so the market is a car journey for most visitors.
