At Wexford Arts Centre · High Street, Wexford, Co. Wexford
The Wexford Cinema Club gathers on the last Friday of each month at Wexford Arts Centre for a screening of independent, classic, or international cinema - the kind of film that rarely makes it onto a multiplex screen. At €5 a ticket, it is one of the better-value evenings out in the county, and the relaxed atmosphere makes it equally welcoming to seasoned film buffs and anyone just curious to see something a little different. If you enjoy a film followed by a proper conversation about it, this is where to be on a Friday night in July.
Each month the Cinema Club selects a single feature - the specific title for the July screening varies, so it is worth checking the Wexford Arts Centre website beforehand. Past programmes have drawn from world cinema, independent releases, and older films that deserve a second look on a big screen. After the credits roll, the evening opens up into an informal discussion: no moderator with a microphone, just people talking about what they watched. The Arts Centre itself is one of the oldest regional arts centres in Ireland, operating from a handsome Georgian building on High Street that dates to 1776 - originally built as a corn market and later the town’s municipal hall. The theatre inside is compact and intimate, which suits this kind of shared viewing well.
Wexford town is about an hour and twenty minutes from Dublin by road, taking the N11/M11 south through Arklow and Gorey. From Waterford it is under an hour on the N25. Wexford train station is a short walk from the town centre - Irish Rail runs regular services from Dublin Connolly (roughly 2 hours 20 minutes) and from Waterford. The Arts Centre sits on High Street in central Wexford, which is compact and walkable from either the station or the bus stops on the quays. Parking is available on the quayside and in off-street car parks a few minutes’ walk away; the town centre is small enough that nothing is far on foot.
A Friday evening screening gives you a good excuse to arrive early and walk the narrow medieval streets of the town, or to follow the screening with a late drink at one of the quayside bars. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
