What to Expect

Market Place Theatre’s monthly dementia-friendly film series continues in October with On The Town, the 1949 MGM musical starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin as three sailors making the most of a single day’s shore leave in New York City. Directed by Kelly and Stanley Donen and built around Leonard Bernstein’s score, it is a bright, tuneful film full of dancing, comic misadventures and a genuine sense of fun, the kind of picture that suits a relaxed sociable morning rather than a formal cinema outing.

The screening runs in the Studio Theatre, which is set out cabaret-style with small tables rather than fixed cinema rows, so it feels closer to a café than a conventional auditorium. House lights stay part-raised instead of going fully dark, the sound is kept gentle, and nobody is expected to sit still and silent for the full run time. People are free to move around, step out, or chat quietly if they need to. The series is designed for people living with dementia, but it is open to everyone, carers, family members and anyone who simply enjoys classic Hollywood musicals.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are included in the ticket price and served as part of the morning, continuing the format used across the theatre’s other dementia-friendly screenings this year, including August’s It Happened One Night and September’s Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Getting There

Armagh city centre is reached via the A3 from Belfast (around 40 minutes) or the A28 from Newry. Market Place Theatre is on Market Street, a short walk from pay-and-display parking on Thomas Street and Scotch Street, and from Armagh bus station on Lonsdale Road. The venue is fully wheelchair accessible.
