Eerieland - Ghost Stories of the North of Ireland - Market Place Theatre, Armagh

Eerieland: Ghost Stories of the North of Ireland brings dark historian Andrew Johnston of Alternative Ulstours to the studio at Market Place Theatre, Armagh, on Thursday 22 October 2026 at 8pm, timed neatly for the run-up to Halloween. It is a one-man spoken word show rather than a scripted play, staged in the studio’s unreserved, tiered seating for an intimate storytelling atmosphere.

What to expect

Johnston takes the audience on what is billed as a virtual road trip through nightmarish lore from Northern Ireland and the Irish border counties, moving between real locations and the ghost stories attached to them. The tales include a remote farmhouse where two failed exorcisms compelled a shattered widow to flee, a tragic spirit that escaped a priest’s trap to haunt a hotel until its fiery destruction, a violent poltergeist that plagued a helpless family in a grand mansion cursed by stolen Egyptian mummies, and a phantom whose touch left a burn mark in one of Ireland’s most notorious stately homes as part of a deadly spectral pact. It is storytelling built for atmosphere rather than jump scares, drawing on local and border-region folklore.

Tickets are £15 full price, £12 concession. Given the subject matter and late evening timing, it suits teenagers and adults rather than young children.

Getting there

The Market Place Theatre is on Market Street in Armagh city centre. From Belfast, the M1 and A3 via Portadown take around an hour; from Dublin, take the A1/N1 through Newry. Translink Goldline and Ulsterbus services run into Armagh bus station on Lonsdale Road, a short walk away, and there is public parking nearby including the Market Street car park.
