Armagh Observatory and Planetarium - Summer Dome Shows and Family Activities

At Armagh Observatory and Planetarium · College Hill, Armagh, Co. Armagh, BT61 9DB

Children at Armagh Planetarium dome show summer family activities

If the idea of watching the Milky Way wheel overhead while sitting in a reclining chair sounds good to you, the dome at Armagh Observatory and Planetarium is worth making a trip for. Running throughout July and August 2026, this summer programme suits families with children of most ages - from toddlers to teenagers - with dome shows, hands-on science, and special weekend events across the two months.

What to expect

The centrepiece is the full-dome planetarium show - a 35-minute immersive presentation projected across a curved ceiling, putting you inside the solar system or deep space depending on the programme. For very young children, an Under 5s show runs on separate sessions: shorter, less dark, and paced for small ones who might struggle with a full show. Both versions are well worth booking in advance as seating is limited.

Beyond the dome, the Stellar Playground lets children build a model solar system, while the Stellar Science Lab has hands-on physics exhibits. There is also a sensory room and an outdoor trail through the historic Observatory grounds and Astropark. On selected summer weekends in July and August, the site runs family days with face painting, craft sessions, and rocket building activities layered on top.

Getting there

Armagh is about 40 minutes south of Belfast on the A3 and around an hour south-west of Dublin via the A1/N1. The Observatory is on College Hill - a short uphill walk from the city centre. There is free on-site parking for cars and coaches. Armagh bus station, served by routes from Belfast and nearby towns, is about ten minutes on foot.

While you’re in Armagh

Armagh is one of the oldest cities on the island - two cathedrals, both named after St Patrick, face each other across the hilltop, and the Georgian Mall is a pleasant stretch a few minutes from the Planetarium. There is more to see in Armagh and across Co. Armagh.
