Athy Basketball Club Summer League

At Athy Sports Complex · Athy Sports Complex, Athy, Co. Kildare

Basketball match

Athy Basketball Club runs one of Kildare’s more active community sport calendars, and the Summer League is its centrepiece for the lighter months. On a Friday evening in July, the Sports Complex fills with players across multiple divisions - from junior underage teams building their game to adult sides that have been competing together for years. Spectators are welcome free of charge, and there is a relaxed, club-night atmosphere that suits anyone wanting a couple of hours of live sport without a ticket queue or a big occasion around it.

What to expect

The Summer League runs fixture nights across several divisions, so there is usually more than one game on the card for the evening. The Athy Sports Complex - run by Kildare Leisure as part of their K-Leisure network - has an indoor sports hall with spectator seating, and the facilities are well maintained. The building also has a coffee dock on site, which makes it easy to arrive early, grab a drink, and settle in before tip-off.

Matches are competitive but the summer format tends to keep things fairly open - clubs use this period to blood new players alongside experienced ones, so the quality of play can be unpredictable in a good way. If basketball is a sport you follow, it is worth checking the club’s fixture schedule ahead of the visit, as multiple games may run across the same evening with varying start times.

Getting there

Athy sits on the River Barrow in the south of Co. Kildare, about 65km from Dublin and roughly 25km south of Newbridge. By car, it is straightforward on the N78 from Kilcullen or the M9 motorway to junction 4 and then local roads into the town. The Sports Complex is on Barrack Lane, a short distance from the town centre, with parking available at the complex itself.

By public transport, Bus Eireann services run from Dublin (Busaras) to Athy, and there is a train connection from Heuston Station on the Waterford/Carlow line, with Athy as a stop. Journey time by train from Dublin is roughly an hour.

While you’re in Athy

The town has more going for it than many people realise - the Shackleton Experience in the Heritage Centre is one of the few places in the world dedicated to the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, who was born nearby, and White’s Castle is a 15th-century tower house worth a look on the riverbank. Clancy’s Bar runs what locals say is Ireland’s longest-standing traditional music session every Thursday night. There is more to see in Athy and across Co. Kildare.
