Birr Castle Demesne’s treehouse and adventure area is open daily through to 31 October 2026, included in general admission rather than sold as a separate attraction. Billed as Ireland’s tallest treehouse, it sits within a wider adventure playground of slides, swings, sand pits and climbing frames, and is the single biggest reason families with young children make the trip to Birr rather than just passing through.
The treehouse itself has had recent additions, including a tower section and a tube slide, on top of the existing structure, so it is worth a look even for families who visited a season or two ago. Around it, the adventure area gives younger children a proper playground to burn off energy in, separate from the more formal parts of the demesne. Because the treehouse is included in general admission, a ticket also covers the wider 120 acre demesne, 10km of walking trails, the seven gallery Science Centre (home to the world’s oldest surviving darkroom) and the Great Telescope, once the largest in the world, so a single visit can fill most of a day rather than just an hour at the playground. Guided interior tours of the castle itself run Monday to Saturday during the summer months as a further add-on for families who want the history alongside the outdoor play. The site has a cafe and toilets, and car parking is free.
Birr Castle Demesne is on Rosse Row, well signposted from Birr town centre, with free car parking on site. Birr is about an hour’s drive from Athlone, Portlaoise and Limerick.
