At Birr Castle Demesne · Rosse Row, Birr, Co. Offaly
Birr Castle runs guided tours of the castle interior Monday to Saturday, through to 5 September 2026, with departures three times a day at 11am, 12:30pm and 2pm. The tours are included with general admission rather than ticketed separately, and give families a proper look inside the building itself, which is otherwise closed to visitors exploring the wider demesne on their own.
A guide leads small groups through a selection of the castle’s historic rooms, covering the building’s architecture, the Parsons family who have lived there for generations, key pieces of furniture on display and some of the treasures the family has collected over the centuries. It runs as a proper guided tour rather than a self-directed wander, so visitors get context and stories about the rooms rather than just walking through them. The tour is aimed at ages 12 and up, so it suits older children and teenagers better than toddlers, who are generally better occupied at the treehouse and adventure playground elsewhere on the grounds. Because the tour is included with general admission, families can combine it with the gardens, the Science Centre, the Great Telescope and the treehouse adventure area for a full day out rather than a single stop. Pre-booking is essential, particularly through July and August when demand is highest, since group sizes on each tour are kept manageable.
Birr Castle Demesne is on Rosse Row, signposted from Birr town centre, with free car parking on site. The castle tour departs from within the grounds after general admission.
Birr has a compact Georgian centre with cafes and shops a short walk from the demesne gates, handy before or after a tour. There is more to see in Birr and across Co. Offaly.
