Carlow 10km Road Race

At Carlow Town Centre · Carlow Town, Co. Carlow

Runners competing in the Carlow 10km road race

A Saturday morning 10km road race through Carlow Town is a proper club event - measured, chip-timed, and submitted to Athletics Ireland for official ranking. Organised by Carlow Athletics Club, it draws club runners and independent athletes from across Carlow and the surrounding counties of Laois, Kilkenny, and Wexford. If you are working towards a summer PB, looking for a well-run local race on a certified course, or simply want a competitive morning out, this is a solid entry on the calendar. It is open to all Athletics Ireland affiliated athletes, with the option for non-competitive entry for runners who want the experience without the official results.

What to expect

The race starts at 11:00am from Carlow Town centre. The route uses roads in and around the town, measured and certified to standard, so the distance is accurate and your chip time will count for Athletics Ireland ranking. Chip timing means results are recorded precisely from the moment you cross the start line to the finish - no bunching or gun-time guesswork. Expect a well-organised morning: race numbers and timing chips are collected at registration on the day, and a warm-up area and changing facilities are available at the start venue. Results are typically published online promptly after the race and submitted to Athletics Ireland’s national database.

Entry is approximately €10 and pre-registration is required - check carlowac.ie for the live entry link closer to the date. An Athletics Ireland membership number is needed for competitive entry; fun runners can enter non-competitively without one.

Getting there

Carlow Town sits at the junction of the N80 and N81, about 85km south-west of Dublin via the M9 motorway - roughly an hour’s drive. From Kilkenny it is 40 minutes on the N10. Town centre car parks are a short walk from the start line; arrive early on race morning as spaces fill around popular events. Carlow Train Station is less than 1km from the town centre and is served by regular Intercity trains from Dublin Heuston and Waterford, making it possible to travel car-free.

While you’re in Carlow

After the race, Carlow Town has a good spread of cafes and bakeries well-suited to post-run recovery. The River Barrow runs through the town and the walking paths along the banks make for a pleasant cool-down. There is more to see in Carlow and across Co. Carlow.
