Carlow Boxing Club Interclub Show

At Carlow Boxing Club · Carlow, Co. Carlow

Amateur boxing bout at a club show in Carlow

An evening of amateur boxing in Carlow town, with bouts running across junior and senior weight categories under official IABA (now Boxing Ireland) rules. Interclub shows are the backbone of grassroots boxing in Ireland - they bring together clubs from across Leinster for competitive bouts in a relaxed, community setting that is nothing like a professional card. The crowd is a mix of families, club coaches shouting from the corners, and people who simply enjoy the sport at its most honest. If you have never been to an amateur boxing show before, this is the right place to start: the pace is fast, the rounds are short, and the sense of occasion is real.

What to expect

The format is straightforward. Each bout lasts three rounds under the supervision of licensed officials, with boxers matched by weight and experience. Junior bouts come early in the card, with senior contests later in the evening. Carlow Boxing Club runs these shows to give its members competitive ring time outside of the major championships, and clubs from across the province travel in to take part, so the matchmaking tends to be lively. Bouts are decided on points by the judges at ringside. The atmosphere in the hall is loud and good-natured - clubs back their own with plenty of noise, but it stays sporting throughout.

Exact venue details for each show are usually announced on the club’s social media pages in the week or two before the event, so it is worth checking there ahead of the night.

Getting there

Carlow town sits at the junction of the N80 and N81, about 85 km south-west of Dublin, and is straightforward to reach by road from most of Leinster. Irish Rail runs regular services between Dublin Heuston and Carlow station, with the journey taking around 90 minutes; the town centre and most indoor venues are a short walk or taxi ride from the station. Bus Eireann also operates routes from Dublin and Kilkenny. Parking in Carlow town is generally available on evenings, with car parks off Potato Market and along the quays a reliable option.

While you’re in Carlow

Carlow is a compact, welcoming town with a good few places to eat and drink before or after the show. Carlow Castle and the Cathedral of the Assumption are both worth a look if you arrive early. There is more to see in Carlow and across Co. Carlow.
