Barrow Valley Triathlon

At River Barrow, Carlow Town · Carlow Town, Co. Carlow

Triathletes entering the River Barrow for the swim leg of a triathlon

The Barrow Valley Triathlon brings multi-sport athletes to Carlow Town on a Sunday morning in August for a race that makes the most of the River Barrow and the quiet roads that run alongside it. Open to both first-timers stepping up from sprint distance and seasoned athletes chasing Olympic personal bests, this is a well-organised club event affiliated with Triathlon Ireland - the kind of race where the atmosphere is warm, the marshals know your name, and the finish line actually feels earned.

What to expect

The race uses the River Barrow for the swim leg, one of the most accessible open water venues in the midlands. The river runs flat and wide through Carlow Town, making sighting straightforward and conditions generally manageable. Expect a wetsuit - water temperature in August can be cool enough to make one mandatory under Triathlon Ireland rules, and you will want the buoyancy regardless.

Sprint distance covers roughly 750m in the water, 20km on the bike and a 5km run. Olympic distance doubles the course: 1,500m swim, 40km cycle and a 10km run. Cycling takes you out onto the local road network, which is well-surfaced and largely flat through the Barrow Valley. The run leg follows a riverside or road route back to the transition area.

Transition is set up at the swim exit point. A timing chip is provided, and route marshals cover the course throughout. Pre-registration is required - there is no on-the-day entry. A Triathlon Ireland membership or a one-day race licence is needed to compete; both can be sorted through Triathlon Ireland’s website before race day.

Getting there

Carlow Town sits on the M9/N9 motorway corridor, about 80km from Dublin and 90km from Cork. By car, take the M9 south from Dublin and exit at Junction 4 for Carlow Town - the drive takes around an hour from the capital. The Carlow Intercity train from Dublin Heuston runs several times daily and takes around 70 minutes; the station is a short walk from the town centre. Bus Éireann and Dublin Coach also serve Carlow regularly. Parking in the town is generally available on-street and in public car parks; check the event website closer to the date for any race-day parking guidance around the river access point.

While you’re in Carlow

Carlow Town has a compact, walkable centre with the ruins of Carlow Castle beside the Barrow, a good selection of cafes and pubs, and Carlow County Museum for those who want to linger after the race. There is more to see in Carlow and across Co. Carlow.
