Carlow Racecourse Flat Race Meeting

At Carlow Racecourse · Carlow Racecourse, Pollerton Road, Carlow, Co. Carlow

Horses racing on the flat at Carlow Racecourse

A summer evening at Carlow Racecourse is one of those uncomplicated pleasures that Irish provincial racing does well. Gates open on the Pollerton Road, a few miles south of the town centre, and by the time the first race goes off at 5:30pm the stands have the relaxed, local feel that the big festival tracks rarely match. Flat meetings here draw a loyal crowd of regulars alongside first-timers looking for an accessible introduction to racing - no dress code pressure, no three-hour drive, just horses on grass and a decent atmosphere for a July Thursday evening.

What to expect

Carlow runs flat racing, which means no jumps and typically shorter, faster contests - the kind of card where you can pick up the rhythm of the form quickly even if you have never studied a racecard before. Meetings organised under the Horse Racing Ireland calendar generally card six to eight races across the evening, giving you plenty of time between races to visit the betting ring, the Tote window, or the on-course food and bar outlets. The grandstand gives a clear view of the home straight, and the racecourse sits alongside the River Burren, which keeps the surroundings green and pleasant well into summer. Because it is an evening fixture, the light is good well past the last race. Carlow hosts several summer meetings across the season - the 9 July card is one of the earlier summer fixtures, so the track tends to be quick and the racing sharp.

Getting there

Carlow town sits on the M9 motorway, roughly 85km south of Dublin. From Dublin, take the M7 then the M9 south and exit at junction 4 for Carlow town; the journey takes just over an hour in normal traffic. From Kilkenny, Carlow is a straightforward 30-minute drive north on the N10. Bus Eireann services connect Dublin Busaras and Waterford to Carlow town, with journey times of around 90 minutes from Dublin. Carlow Train Station on Tullow Street is served by Irish Rail’s Dublin Heuston to Waterford line; the station is about 2km from the racecourse, and a taxi or short drive covers that easily. Car parking is available on the racecourse grounds, so driving is the most convenient option for most visitors.

While you’re in Carlow

Carlow town is compact enough to walk in an afternoon before the racing starts - the medieval castle ruins beside the River Barrow are worth the five-minute detour, and there is a good range of cafes and pubs along Tullow Street for something to eat before you head to the track. There is more to see in Carlow and across Co. Carlow.
