Carlow Open Water Swimming - River Barrow

At River Barrow, Carlow Town · River Barrow, Milford, Carlow, Co. Carlow

Open water swimmers in the River Barrow near Carlow

An early Sunday morning on the River Barrow at Milford is one of those experiences that tends to stay with you - the water cool and dark, the towpath quiet, the town barely awake. Carlow Swimming Club runs supervised open water sessions here through the summer, drawing a mix of seasoned open water swimmers, triathletes in training, and anyone who finds a pool too tame. The sessions are free, safety-covered, and rooted in the kind of low-fuss club culture that makes a cold river feel like a reasonable idea at 8am.

What to expect

The Milford stretch of the Barrow, on the northern edge of Carlow Town, is a calm and relatively flat section of the river - well suited to the steady, sustained effort open water swimming demands. Carlow Swimming Club organises group swims here on summer mornings, with safety cover in place for registered participants. The atmosphere is sociable rather than competitive: regulars tend to know each other, newcomers are welcomed, and a debrief on the bank afterwards is generally part of the morning.

Wetsuits are strongly recommended - the Barrow runs cold even in July - and the club advises that sessions are for competent swimmers only. The Barrow is a navigation river, meaning weirs and lock gates are part of the landscape, so paying attention to the club’s briefing on the day is important. Sessions are also weather-dependent, so checking carlowsc.ie or the club’s social media the morning of is good practice.

Getting there

Carlow Town sits roughly 80km south-west of Dublin on the M9/N9, about an hour by car. The Milford access point is on the R448, the road running north out of town towards Athy. There is roadside parking along the river bank. Bus Eireann connects Carlow to Dublin, Kilkenny, and Waterford, with the town centre a short drive or taxi from Milford. The nearest train station is Carlow, on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line, again roughly a 10-minute drive to the river.

While you’re in Carlow

Carlow Town is worth a morning in itself - the medieval castle ruin beside the Barrow, the County Museum, and a decent coffee scene make it easy to extend the visit beyond the swim. There is more to see in Carlow and across Co. Carlow.
