Cavan Town CCE Set Dancing and Traditional Music Sessions

At Various Cavan Town Venues · Cavan, Co. Cavan

Traditional Irish music session

Cavan Town Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann runs weekly instrumental classes, group trad sessions and ceili set dancing at venues across Cavan town right through the year, not just during its better-known summer concert series. With a membership of over 300, it is one of the larger CCE branches in the region, and its weekly programme is where most of that membership actually learns and plays, rather than performs to an audience.

What to expect

The branch’s weekly programme splits across instrumental classes for various levels, informal group trad sessions where members play together, and ceili set dancing classes open to all ages and abilities, including complete beginners. This is participatory rather than a show: the emphasis is on learning and playing, in contrast to the branch’s separate summer concert series at the Meadowview Inn and Cavan County Museum, which is built for an audience rather than for players. Cavan Town CCE is also the organiser behind two of the county’s bigger annual traditional music fixtures, the Ed Reavy Traditional Music Festival and the County Fleadh Cheoil when it falls to Cavan to host, so the weekly sessions double as the training ground that feeds into both. Exact venues and nights vary through the year as the branch works around hall availability, so contacting the branch directly is the reliable way to find a session to join.

Getting there

Cavan town sits where the N3 from Dublin meets the N54, with Bus Éireann running regular services from Dublin’s Busáras (route 30/30X). Venues are spread across the town itself, so once in Cavan town most sessions are within walking distance of the town centre car parks.

While you’re in Cavan

Cavan town’s centre is small enough to explore in an evening, with plenty of pubs and cafes on Main Street to combine with a session or class. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
