At St Colman's Park · St Colman's Park, Cobh, Co. Cork
A Cork derby under the lights on a Friday evening in July: Cobh Ramblers host Cork City FC at St Colman’s Park in the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division. These two clubs have form this season - the sides drew 1-1 at this same ground back in March, and Cobh famously took their first-ever league win over City at Turner’s Cross in May. There is history between them, and a July meeting with both clubs in contention adds proper weight to the occasion. If you follow League of Ireland football and haven’t made the trip to St Colman’s Park yet, this is the fixture to do it.
St Colman’s Park sits high above Cork Harbour, and on a clear summer evening the views from the terrace are genuinely impressive - the water, the islands, and the cathedral tower of St Colman’s Cathedral all visible from the stands. The ground holds around 4,000 supporters and was redeveloped in the mid-2000s with a 900-seat stand on one side and 450 seats on the east stand. The playing surface was relaid with artificial turf in April 2024, which makes for a consistent, fast game in all conditions.
Kick-off is at 7:45pm, which gives you time to arrive in Cobh in the evening and soak up the harbour town before the match. The atmosphere at derby games here tends to be vocal and tight - both sets of supporters travel well for a Cork fixture, and the compact ground keeps the noise in. This is League of Ireland football at its most local and genuinely contested.
Cobh is connected to Cork city by a direct train line from Cork Kent Station. The journey takes around 25 minutes and drops you right into Cobh town, a short uphill walk from the ground. Trains run regularly on Friday evenings - check the Irish Rail timetable at irishrail.ie closer to the date to plan your return journey after the final whistle.
By car, take the N25 east from Cork city, then the R624 south onto Great Island towards Cobh. Parking in Cobh can be limited on event nights, so arriving early or using the train is the more straightforward option.
Cobh’s harbour front, the Titanic Experience, and the striking Victorian streetscape are all within easy walking distance of the ground. There is more to see in Cobh and across Co. Cork.
