At Abbey Hotel · Main Street, Roscommon, Co. Roscommon
A free evening of music, poetry and spoken word at one of Roscommon’s best-known hotels - the Creative Mic Night is the kind of event that a town the size of Roscommon does particularly well. Run by local artists in partnership with the Abbey Hotel, it draws performers and listeners together for two hours of short, varied sets. If you have never been to an open mic before, this is a good one to start with: the room is mixed, the format is relaxed, and the bill tends to shift between a quiet poem and a full song within minutes.
The night was founded by local artist Bianca Fachel, inspired by Roscommon’s writers’ groups and the Strokestown Poetry Festival scene. Sinéad Byrne, a poet from Athlone, hosts. Named performers this evening include Carmel McLoughlin, Gerry Guthrie and Effie Neill, with the open mic open to anyone who wants to bring a song, a poem, a short story or a piece of spoken word. Previous nights have drawn more than 50 people and 17 performers - a real audience rather than a cluster of performers waiting their turn. The evening runs 8pm to 10pm, compact enough that it does not drag. Entry is free throughout.
Roscommon town sits roughly in the centre of the country, about 90 minutes from Dublin on the N61/M6 and around 50 minutes from Knock Airport. Bus Éireann runs services between Dublin and Roscommon on the 456 route, and from Galway via Athlone. The town is small and walkable once you arrive. The Abbey Hotel has its own car parking, so driving is straightforward if you are coming from outside the town.
Roscommon has a strong Georgian streetscape, a ruined medieval castle at the edge of town and a good scattering of pubs that lean toward trad sessions and live music. A summer evening here is easy to extend before or after the mic night. There is more to see in Roscommon and across Co. Roscommon.
