Dementia Friendly Film Screening: It Happened One Night - Market Place Theatre Armagh

At Market Place Theatre and Arts Centre · Market Street, Armagh, Co. Armagh BT61 7BW

Dementia Friendly Film Screening at Market Place Theatre Armagh

A Thursday morning at the pictures, done properly. Market Place Theatre in Armagh runs a monthly dementia-friendly film series in its Studio Theatre, and August’s screening is It Happened One Night - the 1934 Frank Capra comedy that swept the Oscars and has been charming audiences ever since. Clark Gable plays a fast-talking reporter, Claudette Colbert a runaway heiress, and the whole thing rattles along with wit and warmth for just under two hours. It is the kind of film that asks nothing of you except to enjoy it.

The screenings are designed with people living with dementia in mind, and the atmosphere reflects that. This is not a regular cinema experience where you sit in the dark and stay silent - it is much more relaxed than that.

What to expect

The Studio Theatre is arranged in a cabaret style, with small tables seating three or four people, so it feels more like a café than a conventional cinema. House lights are kept raised rather than fully dimmed, sound levels are gentle, and there is no pressure to remain seated throughout. If someone needs to move around, step out, or simply chat quietly, that is fine.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are included in the ticket price and served as part of the morning. The screening is open to everyone - you do not need to be living with dementia or caring for someone who is. Carers, family members, friends, and anyone who enjoys classic Hollywood cinema are all welcome. The series runs monthly and tends to draw a regular, friendly crowd.

It Happened One Night was the first film to win all five major Academy Awards - Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay - and it held that record for over forty years. It is a genuine pleasure of a film, full of sharp dialogue and likeable performances, and well suited to a relaxed, sociable morning out.

Getting there

Armagh is straightforward to reach by road. From Belfast, take the A3 south-west - it is around 40 minutes. From Dublin, the N1/A1 north brings you up through Newry; Armagh is a further 20 minutes west on the A28. Bus service from Belfast runs regularly into Armagh bus station on Lonsdale Road, about ten minutes’ walk from the theatre.

Market Place Theatre sits on Market Street in the city centre. Pay-and-display car parking is available on Thomas Street and Scotch Street, both a short walk away. The theatre is fully wheelchair accessible.

While you’re in Armagh

Armagh is a city with two cathedrals on competing hills, a fine Georgian mall, a Planetarium and one of Ireland’s oldest public libraries. A morning screening leaves the afternoon free for a walk around the city or a drive into the orchard country that surrounds it in spring and summer. There is more to see in Armagh and across Co. Armagh.
