Dementia Friendly Screening: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers - Market Place Theatre Armagh

At Market Place Theatre and Arts Centre · 9 Market Street, Armagh, Co. Armagh BT61 7BW

Dementia Friendly Film Screening at Market Place Theatre Armagh

Market Place Theatre’s monthly dementia-friendly film series continues in September 2026 with Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, the 1954 MGM musical starring Howard Keel and Jane Powell. Set on a rugged Oregon farmstead, it follows a backwoodsman who brings a wife home and then decides his six brothers need wives too, all told through Gene de Paul’s score and some of the most athletic barn-raising choreography ever put on film. It is bright, tuneful and easy company for a relaxed weekday morning, which is exactly what this series is built around.

What to expect

The screening runs in the Studio Theatre, set out cabaret-style with small tables rather than fixed rows, so the room feels closer to a café than a conventional cinema. House lights stay part-raised throughout rather than going to full dark, sound levels are kept gentle, and nobody is expected to sit still or stay silent. Anyone who needs to get up, move around or step out during the film is free to do so without any fuss. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served as part of the ticket price, and the format tends to draw a warm, regular crowd who come back month after month.

The series is designed with people living with dementia and their carers in mind, but the door is open to everyone. You do not need a diagnosis, and you do not need to be accompanying someone who has one - anyone who fancies a classic film and a chat over tea is welcome.

Getting there

Armagh sits around 40 minutes south-west of Belfast via the A3, and roughly an hour north of Dublin via the A1/N1 through Newry. Translink Goldline coaches run into Armagh bus station on Lonsdale Road, a short walk from the theatre. Market Place Theatre is on Market Street in the city centre, with pay-and-display parking nearby on Thomas Street and Scotch Street.
