Tea and Newspapers - Bangor Carnegie Library

Tea and Newspapers is a simple, long-running idea that Bangor Carnegie Library runs every Friday morning: a table, a pot of tea, and the day’s papers, open to anyone who wants somewhere to sit, read and talk for an hour. Libraries NI describes it as a chance to meet new people and discuss local and national affairs, and it draws a regular crowd of older residents in particular, many of whom have been coming for years.

What to expect

There is nothing to book and nothing to prepare. Turn up between 9:30am and 10:30am on a Friday, and there will be tea, a selection of newspapers and other people happy to talk about whatever is in the news that week. It is unstructured by design, more a standing social invitation than a programmed event, and it runs year-round as part of Libraries NI’s regular adult community programme. The same format runs at Newry City Library on Fridays too, one of several near-identical social sessions Libraries NI operates across its County Down branches to give people a reason to call in and see familiar faces each week, rather than a one-off special event.

Getting there

Bangor is served by Translink trains from Belfast Great Victoria Street and Central, around 30 minutes, with Bangor station a short walk from the town centre library. Goldline and local bus services also run into the town.
