Newtownards Library runs a Daytime Adult Reading Group on the last Monday of every month, an hour set aside for members to discuss whatever book the group is reading that month over tea and conversation. It is one of the more traditional offerings in Libraries NI’s community programme, aimed at adults who want a reason to finish a book and somewhere to talk about it afterwards.
The session runs from 2pm to 3pm and follows the usual book club format: members read an agreed title in advance, then gather to talk through it, share opinions and suggest what to read next. Libraries NI does not require booking for this one, so newcomers can simply turn up on the day. It sits within a broader push by Libraries NI to keep adult reading groups running in towns across County Down, alongside more informal social sessions such as Tea and Newspapers and craft groups at other branches. Titles tend to be chosen with a general adult readership in mind rather than a specific genre, so the group suits a fairly broad range of readers rather than a narrow book-club crowd, and daytime timing makes it accessible to retirees in particular. The cadence is the last Monday of every month, but the August date falls on the Summer Bank Holiday Monday (31 August), when the library is likely closed, so the next clearly confirmed session is Monday, 28 September 2026.
Newtownards has no rail service and is reached by Translink Goldline and Ulsterbus routes from Belfast, around 25 minutes by road. The library sits in the town centre within walking distance of the bus station.
