Castlewellan Market

Market traders' stalls in Castlewellan town centre

Castlewellan holds a licensed general market on the second Monday of every month, one of the smaller and less publicised markets that Newry, Mourne and Down District Council oversees under its markets and fairs scheme. Alongside the monthly market, the town also hosts two larger fairs each year, on the first Monday of May and the first Monday of November, when the council allows extra and bigger pitches.

What to expect

As a council-licensed general market rather than a themed craft or food event, Castlewellan’s stalls are set by whichever traders book a pitch that month, which the council rents at around £12 in advance or £20 on the day. The May and November fair dates draw a bigger turnout, with standard pitches at £20 and larger pitches at £30, and traders are asked to book roughly six weeks ahead for those two dates. The council does not publish fixed daily trading hours for the regular monthly market, so anyone planning a visit is best checking with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council directly before travelling. All traders are required to hold public liability insurance, which keeps the market to established, regular sellers rather than casual one-off stalls, and gives it a steadier, more predictable character than a pop-up event.

Getting there

Castlewellan sits on the A25 between Newcastle and Banbridge, in the shadow of Castlewellan Forest Park. Translink Goldline buses connect the town to Belfast and Newcastle, and there is on-street parking around the town centre.

While you’re in Castlewellan

Castlewellan Forest Park, with its lake and walled garden, sits right on the edge of town and is worth combining with a market visit. There is more to see in Castlewellan and across Co. Down.
