Feile Brian Boru

At Killaloe and Ballina Town Centres · Ballina, Co. Tipperary and Killaloe, Co. Clare

Feile Brian Boru

Every July, the twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina mark the life of Ireland’s most famous High King with five days of music, heritage, sport and community events across both banks of the River Shannon. Féile Brian Ború - now in its 32nd year - draws locals and visitors to the very place where Brian Ború was born and ruled from his royal palace of Kincora. If you have any interest in early Irish history, or just want a lively summer festival in a genuinely beautiful setting, this one is worth the trip.

What to expect

The programme mixes indoor and outdoor events across Killaloe (Co. Clare) and Ballina (Co. Tipperary), with different highlights on each of the five days.

Heritage walkers can join free guided tours of Killaloe, which served as the capital of Ireland for twelve years under Brian Ború after he was crowned High King in 1002. The 12th-century cathedral of St. Flannan - with its striking Ogham and Runic carvings - is one of the stops that brings that era to life.

Saturday is the busiest day. The Blessing of the Fleet at Ballina Quay is a long-standing local tradition. A Viking village takes over the Dean’s Field, followed by a Viking parade across to Flanagan’s in Ballina with a battle challenge between clan leaders. Family workshops let children aged 6 and up make warrior swords and shields - booking is advised. A camogie tournament between local clubs also runs during the week.

Friday brings family entertainment with the Brian Ború Boogie - dancing, face painting and balloon fun for younger visitors.

Getting there

Ballina sits on the Tipperary bank of the Shannon, at the southern end of Lough Derg, roughly 20 km from Nenagh and about 55 km from Limerick. The two towns are connected by a thirteen-arch stone bridge. From Dublin, take the M7 south-west and exit towards Nenagh. Bus Éireann runs services to Killaloe from Limerick. Parking is available in both town centres but fills quickly on the busy Saturday.

While you’re in Ballina

The Brian Ború Heritage Centre on the bridge in Killaloe traces the town’s history from the 10th century with maps, exhibits and a gift shop - a natural stop before or after festival events. There is more to see in Ballina and across Co. Tipperary.
