Galtee Crossing 2026

At Galtee Mountains · Anglesborough, Co. Tipperary

Galtee Crossing mountain walk

The Galtee Crossing is one of the most demanding challenge walks in Ireland - a full traverse of the Galtee mountain range in a single day, taking in every significant peak along the ridge from one end to the other. Starting at 7:00 AM on Saturday 27 June, this is an event for people who want to push themselves across serious mountain terrain, not a leisurely morning stroll. If you have solid hillwalking experience, good navigation skills, and the legs for 30 kilometres with more than 2,000 metres of ascent and descent, this is a rare chance to cross one of Ireland’s finest upland ranges in one go.

What to expect

The Galtee Mountains run east to west across south Tipperary and into Limerick, forming Ireland’s highest inland mountain range. The crossing takes in the full ridge - Galtymore at 919 metres is the highest point, but the route strings together a long sequence of summits including Galtybeg, Greenane, Farbreaga, Lyracappul and Temple Hill, among others. The route finishes down into the Anglesborough area on the Limerick side of the range.

This is a self-navigating event. There are no marshals pointing the way, so you need to be comfortable with map and compass on open mountain ground. Weather in the Galtees can turn quickly even in June, and the upper slopes are exposed. The early 7:00 AM start is sensible for a crossing of this length - you will want the full day. Come prepared: waterproofs, warm layers, enough food and water for a long mountain day, and a map of the range (OSi Discovery Sheet 74 covers the area). Proper mountain boots are essential on ground like this.

The event is organised by Galtee Walking Club, a long-established local club with deep knowledge of these mountains. Check their website at galteewalkingclub.ie for the confirmed start location and any updated logistics before you go.

Getting there

Anglesborough village sits on the northern slopes of the Galtees, reached via the R665 from Cahir or by minor roads from Tipperary town, roughly 15 kilometres to the north-west. The nearest large town is Cahir, which is well signed from the M8 Dublin-Cork motorway. There is no public transport serving the mountain approach, so you will need your own car or a lift. Car-sharing with other participants is worth arranging - the route is a linear traverse rather than a loop, so logistics around start and finish points are worth confirming with the organiser in advance.

While you’re in Tipperary

The Galtees sit at the southern edge of the beautiful Glen of Aherlow, which is worth exploring if you have time before or after the walk. There is more to see in Tipperary and across Co. Tipperary.
