Heritage Boat Pontoon at Portumna Bridge

At Portumna Bridge · Portumna, Co. Tipperary

Heritage boat pontoon at Portumna Bridge

Portumna Bridge is one of the more quietly remarkable structures on the River Shannon - a 1911 swing bridge that still opens on demand for waterway traffic, rotating on its central pivot to let tall-masted boats pass through. This free heritage event puts visitors right beside that living piece of engineering, with traditional boats moored at the pontoons on either side of the bridge. If you have any interest in Ireland’s inland waterways, the Shannon’s long history as a commercial artery, or simply enjoy being on or near the water on a summer Sunday, this is an easy and rewarding few hours.

What to expect

The event is organised by Portumna Heritage and takes place at the pontoon area directly beside Portumna Bridge, where boats moor while waiting for the swing section to open. The setup lets you get close to traditional craft on the water and hear about the bridge’s own story - it was designed by London engineer C. E. Stanier and built on Hayes’s Island, the mid-river island that splits the Shannon into two channels here. The limestone piers and parapets date from an 1834 predecessor bridge, while the steel swing mechanism is considered the largest early-twentieth-century swing bridge in Europe. Waterway heritage talks and guided access to the pontoon area are typical at events like this. Come at midday when things get under way and allow a couple of hours to take it in properly.

Getting there

Portumna sits at the north end of Lough Derg, where the Shannon marks the border between County Galway on the western bank and County Tipperary on the eastern side. From Nenagh, take the R494 north - roughly 30 minutes. From Roscrea, the R490 brings you north-west. From Galway city the N65 runs directly south-east to Portumna, about 55 minutes. There is no direct bus service to Portumna from major towns; driving is the practical option. Parking is available near the bridge itself and along the quays in town.

While you’re in Tipperary

Portumna is just inside the Tipperary border, with Portumna Forest Park - a large Coillte woodland on the lakeshore - a short drive away for a walk after the event. There is more to see in Tipperary and across Co. Tipperary.
