Fregoli Theatre Company brings Hill of the Hares to Roscommon Arts Centre on Saturday, 5 September 2026 at 8pm, a new play by Roscommon writer Maria Tivnan staged in partnership with the Mick Lally Theatre in Galway and Roscommon Arts Centre itself. It is a homecoming date of sorts, given the writer’s own roots in the county, and one of two confirmed venues carrying this production in its opening run.
The play follows Cass and Michael, who return to their hometown after nine years apart and find themselves at the same funeral, pulled back toward the night that changed everything between them. Tivnan’s writing is described as rooted directly in the Irish landscape, asking audiences to listen to the earth as much as to the characters, and to think about where they come from and what might eventually call them back. Fregoli Theatre Company works out of the west of Ireland and focuses specifically on new and original writing rather than revivals, so this is a first outing for the script rather than a well-worn touring production. Expect a single-set, character-driven two-hander built around the returning pair rather than a large ensemble, with the funeral and its aftermath used as the frame for everything the characters are avoiding saying to each other.
Roscommon Arts Centre is on Circular Road in Roscommon town, a short walk from the town centre and the train station. Roscommon is served by Iarnrod Eireann’s Dublin-Westport/Galway line, and Bus Eireann routes connect the town to Athlone, Galway and Sligo.
