At Kildare RFC · Kildare RFC grounds, Kildare, Co. Kildare
A Saturday afternoon at Cill Dara RFC is one of those uncomplicated sporting pleasures that doesn’t ask much of you - just turn up, find a spot on the touchline, and watch a decent game of club rugby. The club plays its home matches at Silken Thomas Park in Dunmurray on the edge of Kildare town, a tidy modern ground with three pitches and a clubhouse to retreat to if the weather turns. The €5 entry makes it an easy afternoon out for a family or anyone passing through the county on a summer weekend.
Cill Dara RFC competes in the Leinster League and has been in solid form in recent seasons, so the standard of play is respectable. Summer fixtures tend to be preseason or friendly matches against visiting clubs, which keeps the atmosphere relaxed while the rugby itself remains competitive enough to hold your attention. The ground has a club bar serving refreshments, and there is car parking on site. Kids are welcome, though the club asks that dogs are kept off the pitches. The match on 4 July 2026 kicks off at 3pm - a civilised hour that leaves plenty of time to explore the town before or after.
Kildare town sits on the M7 motorway, roughly 50km south-west of Dublin, making it an easy drive from the capital or from the midlands. The Dublin - Heuston to Kildare rail line runs frequently; the train takes around 40 minutes from Heuston and drops you a short walk from the town centre. From the station, Silken Thomas Park at Dunmurray is reachable on foot or by taxi. If you are driving, there is parking at the club grounds.
Kildare town is the home of the Irish National Stud and the Japanese Gardens, both of which are well worth an hour or two before a 3pm kick-off. The town itself has a handful of good spots for lunch. There is more to see in Kildare and across Co. Kildare.
