Draft Laois Biodiversity Action Plan: Public Consultation Closes

At Laois County Council · Aras an Chontae, JFL Avenue, Portlaoise, Co. Laois

A woodland path in County Laois

Public consultation on the Draft Laois Biodiversity Action Plan 2026-2031 closes on Friday, 21 August 2026 at 4pm, giving residents, community groups, landowners, businesses, schools and environmental organisations a final window to have their say. The plan was prepared by Laois County Council with the Heritage Council to guide biodiversity conservation across the county for the next five years, and it opened for public engagement on 13 July 2026. Anyone who wants their views on file needs to get a submission in before the closing deadline.

What to expect

The plan itself sets out how the council intends to protect and enhance habitats and species across Laois over the next five years, and to build greater public awareness and participation in that work. Feedback can be submitted in writing to the council’s Biodiversity Officer, online through the consult.laois.ie portal, or in person: the council has run public engagement sessions at libraries and community venues across the county as part of the process, alongside the online submission window. This is a genuine chance to shape a document that will guide council policy and funding decisions on habitats, hedgerows, wildlife corridors and green spaces for years to come, so it is worth the ten minutes it takes to read the draft and respond, rather than something to leave to specialists.

Getting there

Written submissions go to the Biodiversity Officer at Aras an Chontae, the council’s headquarters on JFL Avenue in Portlaoise, a short walk from the town centre and train station. Most people will find it quicker to submit online through the consultation portal rather than travelling in.
