The Laois Shopping Centre Intermediate Football Championship is the county’s second-tier adult football grade, sitting below the Senior Championship and above the three Junior grades, and it is where several well-supported Laois clubs are competing for promotion in 2026. Round 2 is played across 7 and 8 August, with Ballylinan hosting Mountmellick on Saturday 8 August as one of the featured pairings, throw-in at 7:00pm. It follows an opening round played in late July, and results from Round 2 will decide the shape of the group standings heading toward the knockout stages later in August and September.
Intermediate football in Laois has a reputation for tight, competitive games, often between clubs who have recently been relegated from or are pushing for promotion to the Senior Championship, so the standard tends to be high even without the senior grade’s bigger crowds. It is a good option for anyone who wants to see genuine championship football without the scramble for tickets that the Senior Championship’s marquee fixtures can bring.
Ballylinan is in south Laois, close to the Carlow and Kildare borders, reachable via the R419 off the M9, with Portlaoise around 25 minutes away by car. Mountmellick, in north Laois, sits on the R422 a short drive from Portlaoise. Both towns are best reached by car, as public transport links to individual club grounds are limited; Portlaoise train station, on the Dublin Heuston to Cork and Limerick line, is the nearest rail option for either fixture.
