At Kavanaghs Bar & Venue · 28 Main Street, Portlaoise, Co. Laois
If you grew up with American Idiot on repeat or know every word of Basket Case, this is an evening worth clearing your diary for. Green Week - billed as the ultimate Green Day cover band - bring the full catalogue of punk rock anthems to Kavanagh’s Bar & Venue on Main Street, Portlaoise. Organised by Cheap Heat Productions, it is a proper rock night: a live band hammering through the songs, a venue that has been doing this since 1869, and a crowd that has usually come specifically to sing along. This suits anyone who loves Green Day, anyone who wants a lively Friday night out in Laois, and anyone who has been waiting for a decent gig since summer ended.
Green Week play a full tribute set of Green Day material - the kind of show that works through the hits in roughly the order you would want to hear them: the early 90s grunge-pop, the punk-pop peak of Dookie, and the big-arena songs from American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. Cheap Heat Productions runs tribute-band nights across Irish venues, so the production is polished rather than thrown together. The event listing puts the show at approximately three hours, starting at 9pm and running until midnight, which is a solid run for a cover band. The venue is 18+. Tickets start from EUR 15 and are available through Eventbrite.
Kavanagh’s itself is part of what makes this work. It is a long-established family pub and live music room that has hosted everything from comedy nights - Flight of the Conchords played here early in their career - to Éistmusic sessions. It is big enough to take a proper band set-up but not so large that it loses atmosphere. The room fills quickly for good gigs, so arriving close to doors time is sensible.
Portlaoise is the county town of Laois and sits squarely on the main Dublin to Cork road, the M7 - roughly an hour by car from Dublin and 90 minutes from Cork. It is also one of the better-served towns on the Irish rail network: Portlaoise station is on the Dublin Heuston to Cork and Limerick lines, with regular services throughout the day. The station is a ten-minute walk from Main Street. Kavanagh’s is at number 28 on Main Street, right in the town centre. Street parking is available nearby in the evenings.
Portlaoise is a handy base for a longer trip - the Rock of Dunamase, a striking ruined fortress on a limestone outcrop, is just a few kilometres out the road. There is more to see in Portlaoise and across Co. Laois.
