The Three-Day Pilgrimage at St Patrick’s Purgatory on Station Island, Lough Derg is one of the most demanding pilgrimages in the Christian world, combining fasting, prayer, bare-foot walking of the penitential beds, and two nights on the island. Pilgrims fast from midnight before arriving and continue fasting throughout. The pilgrimage season runs from 29 May to 13 August 2026 for arrivals, with all pilgrims departing by 15 August. Pilgrims must be at least 15 years old and able to kneel unaided. Cavan has a strong tradition of pilgrimage to Lough Derg, which is approximately 90 minutes’ drive from Cavan town via Enniskillen.
