Castlebar Celtic FC League Fixture

At Castlebar Celtic FC Grounds · Castlebar, Co. Mayo

Soccer fixture

An evening league fixture at Castlebar Celtic is one of the more enjoyable ways to spend a Tuesday or Tuesday-like September night in Mayo. Admission is free, the ground is compact and atmospheric, and you are watching a club with a hundred years of history behind it - one that has shaped the game in the county since the 1920s. The crowd is local and knowledgeable, the pace is honest, and there is none of the distance between spectators and the pitch that you get at bigger venues. Good for anyone who enjoys grassroots football without the fuss.

What to expect

Castlebar Celtic play their home matches at Celtic Park on Pavilion Road - a ground the club has occupied since 1954, when they bought what was then known as Flannelly’s Field. The pitch is 100 by 60 yards of grass, and the ground holds around 1,500 spectators, so you can always find a decent vantage point. The club competes in the Mayo Association Football League and has done so at a serious level for decades - they won five consecutive league titles from 1957 to 1962 and repeated that feat across the 1980s. This September fixture is a regional league match, so expect competitive, physical football between well-drilled club sides. A clubhouse is on site and refreshments are available. Kick-off is at 7:30pm, so the light should still be reasonable for most of the first half in early September.

Getting there

Castlebar is the county town of Mayo and is well served by road. It sits on the N5 from Dublin (via Longford and Roscommon) and the N60 from Galway. Bus Eireann runs regular services from Dublin, Galway, and Westport into Castlebar Bus Station on Market Square - the Celtic Park ground on Pavilion Road is a short walk from the town centre. If you are driving, parking is available at the venue. The town has additional parking near the Mall and the main shopping streets if the ground is busy.

While you’re in Castlebar

Castlebar is a lively county town with a good mix of pubs, restaurants, and historic sites - the Mall in the centre is one of the finest tree-lined promenades in the west of Ireland, and the National Museum of Ireland (Country Life) is a short drive away at Turlough Park. There is more to see in Castlebar and across Co. Mayo.
