Castlebar Golf Club Summer Outing

At Castlebar Golf Club · Castlebar, Co. Mayo

Golf outing

A summer golf outing at Castlebar Golf Club is one of those easy days out that suits a wide range of players - from low handicappers after a competitive round to social golfers who just want a good walk, a proper lunch, and a few prizes to aim at. The entry fee of €50 covers your green fee and gives you a shot at the prizes, with lunch thrown in. Registration in advance is required, so this is best booked rather than turned up to on the day.

What to expect

Castlebar Golf Club plays across 18 holes, par 72, laid out over mature tree-lined fairways with undulating greens and strategically placed bunkers. The course stretches to 6,440 yards from the blue tees, with shorter options down to 5,454 yards from the reds, so golfers of all standards have a fair run at it. Water features come into play at several points, keeping things honest without being punishing. The course is well regarded in Connacht - it hosted the 2004 Irish Boys Amateur Close Championship, which was won that year by a young Rory McIlroy - and has since welcomed everyone from club members to visiting presidents. After the round, the award-winning clubhouse restaurant is there for post-round food and a debrief. The format for summer outings here typically runs as a stroke play or stableford competition, with prizes across categories and the full results posted on the day.

Getting there

Castlebar is the county town of Mayo and is straightforward to reach. From Dublin, the N5 brings you directly through Longford, Roscommon, and into town in roughly two and a half hours. From Galway, the N84 north through Ballinrobe is about an hour. Bus Eireann runs regular services from Dublin and Galway into Castlebar’s Bus Station on the Westport Road. Castlebar Golf Club is at Rocklands, on the edge of town - most sat-navs will find it without difficulty, and there is parking at the clubhouse.

While you’re in Castlebar

The town has a decent main street with cafes and pubs, and Lough Lannagh and its surrounding woodland park make for a pleasant walk if you want to stretch the legs before or after the golf. There is more to see in Castlebar and across Co. Mayo.
