Mayo GAA Football Club Championship

GAA football championship

Club football in Mayo runs deep, and the county club championship is where those allegiances play out week after week across the summer. This is not a one-day event but a rolling competition - matches take place at club grounds right across the county from July through August, with each game drawing its own tight community of supporters. If you find yourself in Mayo on a Sunday afternoon, getting along to a local club match is one of the more honest ways to spend a few hours.

What to expect

The Mayo Senior Football Club Championship has been running since 1888, making it one of the oldest county competitions in the country. The trophy contested is the Paddy Moclair Cup, and winning it earns a club the right to represent Mayo in the Connacht Senior Club Championship and potentially the All-Ireland series. The strongest clubs in the county include Ballina Stephenites, Castlebar Mitchels, Knockmore, and Breaffy, and any match-up between them tends to draw a crowd. Fixtures in July are typically group-stage rounds, played at the home grounds of the participating clubs. That means a genuine local atmosphere - small covered stands, a tea hut, and supporters who know every player on the pitch by name. Entry fees are modest, usually around five euro or a little more, and the standard of football is consistently high given the depth of talent in the county.

Getting there

Castlebar is the county town of Mayo and the most central hub for travelling to matches across the county. It sits on the N60 from Roscommon and the N5 from Dublin, with the journey from Dublin taking around two and a half hours. Bus Eireann services connect Castlebar to Galway, Westport, and Ballina. Most club grounds are rural and have ample roadside or field parking on match days. Check the specific fixture details on the Mayo GAA website before travelling so you know which ground is hosting - venues vary each round.

While you’re in Castlebar

Castlebar town has a good selection of pubs and places to eat, and MacHale Park - Mayo’s main county stadium - is worth walking past if you have any interest in the GAA’s presence in the town. There is more to see in Castlebar and across Co. Mayo.
