Mayo GAA Hurling Club Championship

At Various venues · County Mayo

GAA hurling championship

Club hurling in Mayo is a game played close to the bone. The county is not a hurling heartland in the way Tipperary or Kilkenny is, which means every match carries an extra edge - the clubs that turn out are doing so out of genuine passion, not tradition on autopilot. The Mayo GAA Hurling Club Championship runs through the summer with senior clubs including Castlebar Mitchels, Tooreen, Ballyhaunis and St. Ciaran competing for county honours. If you want to watch Gaelic games without the crowds and the car parks of an All-Ireland Sunday, an afternoon like this is exactly the right entry point.

What to expect

Championship matches take place at club grounds across the county, with Castlebar Mitchels hosting fixtures at their ground on McHale Road - Páirc Josie Munnelly and Páirc Gerry McDonald. Hurling at club level in Mayo is fast and physical, and with a relatively small pool of senior hurling clubs, every game between them carries genuine weight. Tooreen have dominated Mayo senior hurling in recent years, holding the most county titles, so when any side lines out against them the stakes feel real. Junior and underage hurling is also growing, with around nine clubs now running junior teams - so on a match day you can often catch more than one grade of the game across the afternoon.

Getting there

Castlebar is the county town of Mayo and straightforward to reach. The N5 connects it to Westport (30 minutes west), Roscommon and Dublin to the east. The N60 and N84 bring traffic in from Ballina and Ballinrobe. Bus Eireann runs regular services into Castlebar town from Galway, Westport, Ballina and Dublin, with the town well served as a regional hub. Local club grounds in and around Castlebar are typically a short drive or walk from the town centre. Parking at club venues in Mayo is almost always free and plentiful on the day.

While you’re in Castlebar

The town has a decent main street for a bite after the match, and the Museum of Mayo (National Museum of Ireland - Country Life) is a short drive out at Turlough Park - one of the better free museums in the country. There is more to see in Castlebar and across Co. Mayo.
