Monksland Midsummer Music Fest

At Monksland · Monksland, Co. Roscommon

Monksland Midsummer Music Fest

Midsummer in Monksland means live music, open air, and a crowd that already knows each other - the best conditions for a community festival. The Monksland Midsummer Music Fest is an annual free event put on by the people of Monksland, the busy residential quarter on the western, Roscommon side of Athlone. It is aimed squarely at families, so if you have children in tow or simply want an afternoon out without a cover charge, this is a good fit. Early July light lasts well past nine o’clock here, and the mood at events like this tends to be relaxed from the start.

What to expect

Live music runs through the afternoon from 2pm, mixing local performers and community acts in a format that keeps things accessible rather than loud and showy. Community-organised festivals in the Irish midlands typically draw on a wide pool - trad sessions, folk sets, youth groups, local bands doing original material - and the emphasis is on participation as much as performance. Bring a blanket or a folding chair if the weather plays along; this is the kind of afternoon where you set up and stay a while. There will be entertainment geared at children throughout the day. Because admission is free and the organiser is the Monksland community itself, the atmosphere is informal - expect neighbours, GAA jerseys and ice-cream vans rather than wristbands and security queues.

Getting there

Monksland sits on the western edge of Athlone, directly across the River Shannon from the town centre. From Dublin, take the M6 motorway west and exit at Athlone; Monksland is signposted on the R446 approaching from the east. From Galway, the N61 / M6 brings you into Athlone from the west. Bus Éireann runs regular services between Dublin and Athlone (route 20 / X20), and local services cross into the Monksland area. Athlone town itself is a 15-minute walk or a short bus ride from the Monksland Community Centre on the (090) 649 3836 side of the river. Parking around the community centre and the surrounding residential streets is generally straightforward on a Saturday afternoon.

While you’re in Roscommon

Athlone town is only minutes away and worth an hour or two - the castle on the Shannon bank, the west bank’s cafes and the river walk are all easy additions to the day. There is more to see in Roscommon and across Co. Roscommon.
