Linn Gallery in Clonmel is showing a Plein Air Exhibition from Tuesday, 7 July through Saturday, 5 September 2026, bringing together work painted outdoors, on location, rather than composed later in a studio. The gallery occupies the first floor of The Narrow Space on Mitchell Street, a small independent space that describes its mission as helping visitors discover contemporary Irish art. Viewing is free during normal gallery hours.
Plein air painting, French for “open air,” means the artist works directly in front of the subject, whether that is a stretch of the River Suir, a Tipperary field or a street corner, rather than photographing it and finishing the piece indoors. The style has a long history in Irish landscape art and tends to produce looser, more immediate brushwork than studio-composed painting, since the artist is racing changing light rather than working from a fixed reference. Linn Gallery is a working commercial gallery rather than a public museum space, so the exhibited paintings are available to buy as well as view, and the gallery encourages visitors to browse without any obligation.
