Queen of the Castle Festival

At Cahir Castle and Town Centre · Cahir, Co. Tipperary

Queen of the Castle Festival

The Queen of the Castle Festival brings four days of music, arts, community spirit and a distinctly rural Irish tradition to one of the most photogenic settings in Munster. Founded in 2024 by Rathkeevin Macra na Feirme - a rural youth organisation whose members are mostly aged between 17 and 35 from the towns and villages around Cahir and Clonmel - the festival puts women front and centre: their creativity, their community ties, and their stories. It draws Macra clubs from across the country and Queens from all over Ireland, with an international flavour that sits comfortably alongside its South Tipperary roots. If you are looking for a bank holiday weekend that mixes genuine local character with good entertainment, this is one worth planning around.

What to expect

The festival uses Cahir Castle as its main backdrop - and it is hard to think of a more striking venue. The castle, one of the largest and best-preserved in Ireland, stands on a rocky island in the River Suir and dates to the thirteenth century. Against that setting, the programme spreads across live music and arts performances, inspiring talks, family-friendly activities and food. The centrepiece is the Queen competition itself, where entrants represent their Macra clubs and communities; it is less a conventional beauty pageant and more a celebration of personality, involvement and the things women bring to rural life. Crowds come as much to support their own representative as to take in the wider festival atmosphere. Exact programme details for 2026 are released closer to the event - check the official website for the schedule as it is confirmed.

Getting there

Cahir sits on the N24 in central Tipperary, roughly equidistant between Clonmel (16 km east) and Tipperary town (21 km west), with the M8 Cork-Dublin motorway a short drive away at junction 10. By car it is about two hours from Dublin and one hour from Cork. Cahir railway station has services on the Limerick Junction - Waterford line; note that Sunday services do not run, so check timetables if you are travelling at the weekend. Bus Eireann route 355 connects Cahir with Clonmel and Tipperary town. There is a dedicated public car park beside the castle with around 120 spaces at a small hourly charge; free parking applies after 6 pm. Arrive early during the bank holiday weekend as spaces fill quickly.

While you’re in Cahir

Cahir town is compact and easy on foot. The Swiss Cottage - a thatched Regency-era pleasure cottage two kilometres from the castle - is worth the short walk or drive, and the River Suir trail makes for a pleasant stretch between festival sessions. There is more to see in Cahir and across Co. Tipperary.
