Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre in Tulsk is the visitor gateway to Rathcroghan, the royal complex of ancient Connacht and one of the largest unexcavated archaeological landscapes in Europe. On Saturday, 8 August 2026 the centre runs Reviving the Óenach: Lughnasa, an in-house talk and live demonstration built around the old harvest quarter day. Blacksmith Tom King demonstrates traditional forge techniques on site, and the centre’s own guides set the craft in its historical context for the audience.
An óenach was a public assembly held at one of Ireland’s ancient royal sites on a quarter day, mixing games, trade, law-making and ritual, and Rathcroghan was one of the most important óenach sites in the country. This session focuses on Lughnasa, the 1 August harvest festival, and uses blacksmithing as its practical thread: Tom King works a forge in front of the audience while the talk covers how metalworking fitted into the seasonal and ceremonial life of the site. It follows a similar Reviving the Óenach session built around Bealtaine that the centre ran in May, so this looks to be part of a wider seasonal programme rather than a one-off. The session runs for two hours, from 11am to 1pm, with the option to attend in person or join the lecture portion online, though the demonstration itself is only visible on site.
Tulsk sits on the N5 Dublin to Castlebar road, and Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre is in the village itself, well signposted from the main road. The centre has its own car park. As of mid-2026, access into the Rathcroghan cave on guided tours is restricted under a health and safety review, though this has no bearing on the Lughnasa talk.
